Play With Your Food: Bowtie Pasta (Farfalle)

Farfalle is a great pasta to make into play food because of its distinctive look that is easy to replicate.

{ TO EAT }

I improvised this recipe years ago by simply replacing the powdered cheese with deli cheese slices. It’s as easy as macaroni and cheese from the box because it follows the same directions and doesn’t take much more time. I usually like to add broccoli and occasionally some grape tomatoes (if I have them on hand).

Super-Easy Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese like from the Box, but Better

  • Bowtie, shell, or elbow macaroni
  • Sliced American cheese
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Pepper / Salt
  • Nutmeg (optional)
  • Broccoli (optional), cut into bite-size pieces
  • Grape Tomatoes (optional), halved

Cook macaroni as usual. If eating broccoli, add to macaroni pot when macaroni is almost fully cooked. Drain. Pick out broccoli and set aside.

In same pot, melt a few slices of cheese add some milk, butter and pinch of nutmeg (if you want to get fancy). Add more milk as needed.

Season to taste with pepper. Salt will most likely not be necessary as generally the cheese is salty enough.

Serve in a bowl(s) and top with broccoli and tomatoes. Sprinkle salt on the broccoli.

(A photo will be posted here – the next time I make it.)
